The East Suffolk Conservative Group has launched a forensic investigation into the ongoing recycling crisis affecting residents, accusing the current political leadership of a "fundamental failure" in rolling out the new service.
The Council’s Green Party administration launched its ‘Better Recycling’ waste collection service in June 2026 with the aim to standardise the process and boost national recycling rates. However, the roll-out of the initiative has faced several operational challenges leading to weeks of missed waste and food bin collections and delays in the delivery of new bins.
Conservative councillors have been challenging the administration daily over missed collections and systemic disruptions. However, the opposition group has strategically decided not to table public questions at the upcoming Full Council meeting on Thursday, 23rd July 2026.
The group stated that asking questions now would be premature, as it would allow the Green administration to dismiss the widespread disruptions as mere "teething problems." Instead, Conservative members are actively collating hard evidence directly from impacted residents to mount a robust, undeniable case against the cabinet's handling of the roll-out.
Cllr Mark Jepson, Leader of the East Suffolk Conservatives, said: “You only get one opportunity to challenge the administration effectively at Full Council. Anticipating that our residents would not receive the transparent answers they deserve, we have purposely delayed our public questions to give the administration time to get recycling right.
“Council questions must be submitted well in advance. I was deeply concerned that the administration would simply use the excuse that the rollout was in its early days.
“We recognise the severe frustrations our residents have faced. They deserve evidenced, considered, and forensic questioning that reflects the poor leadership of what should have been a relatively simple new programme.
“We are relying on this administration to lead us into future unitary authorities. This chaotic rollout strongly suggests they currently do not possess the skills to deliver such a critical new aspect of local government.”
The East Suffolk Conservatives are urging all residents who are still experiencing recycling disruption, missed bins, or poor communication to continue sharing their evidence with their local Conservative ward councillors to ensure a comprehensive case is built.’
